Some tough news coming out of the football program this morning…
Kentucky Football has suffered another preseason injury — aside from Hardley Gilmore’s broken clavicle — just weeks before the start of the season. This morning, the news was broke first by KSR’s Matt Jones.
Kentucky’s expected starting running back and transfer from Ohio State, Chip Trayanum, suffered a hand injury in practice this week. The report says it was a broken bone and that he is expected to miss three to four weeks from it. This is the equivalent to the first two games of the season.
This is not the news you want to hear if you are a Kentucky fan. Gilmore was not that huge of a blow considering the depth at the wide receiver spot, but this one is a little bit different. The running back position was already lacking some depth but now this brings some major question marks. If there is any silver-lining it is that Kentucky should see Trayanum back for the Georgia game. In the meantime, it is the next man up in the position group. Kentucky will have to heavily lean on Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, as well as, freshmen Jamarion Wilcox and Jason Patterson.
The only thing that concerns me in regards to Sumo-Karngbaye is that he is not your typical smash-mouth running back. He is more of a receiving back. However, there has been a lot of good things said about redshirt freshman, Jamarion Wilcox this summer. Also, Patterson has had a good preseason as well so if you can make it through the first two games then you have to feel good on getting your first option back in Trayanum if you’re Mark Stoops.
It seems like every summer/preseason Kentucky Football takes a hit from the injury bug. It suck’s every time, but what can you do about it? Next man up.
