Jasper Johnson Commits To Kentucky

There was a period of time that I didn’t think I would be writing this article with this being the result. Kentucky appeared at times to be out of the running for the unanimous top-15 recruit, at least online. The reports coming from UK’s side say they feel like they were never out any point as the staff was in a heavy recruiting battle with both Alabama and North Carolina for the generational talent.

Johnson is a 6’4” 175-pound combo guard from Versailles, Kentucky. In his freshman and sophomore seasons he played for Woodford County High School where he led the Yellowjackets to the state tournament in 2023.

During Jasper’s junior season, he left the state and played for Link Academy out of Missouri. This summer, he has decided to transfer again for his senior season to Overtime Elite which is based out of Atlanta, Georgia. This is the same institution that former Kentucky Basketball star Rob Dillingham played with before arriving in Lexington.

Jasper Johnson will go down as the first 5-star commitment in the Mark Pope era at Kentucky. Just a few weeks ago, Mark Pope also got a commitment from in-state top-25 prospect Malachi Moreno, who is entering his senior season at Great Crossing High School in Georgetown (KY.). There was some concern from some of the fan base about Mark Pope’s recruiting abilities upon arrival, but even though Johnson and Moreno are in-state recruits they could have easily gone elsewhere, so props to Mark Pope for keeping them home in the Bluegrass against the other notable programs.

If you’re a Kentucky fan — and if you’re reading this you probably are — you have to be excited about all of the talented in-state guys wearing a Kentucky jersey the last several years. From Reed Sheppard last season to Travis Perry and Trent Noah this coming season, and now there are two more home grown Kentucky players coming in the next year, there is a realistic scenario that there will be four players on next season’s roster from the state of Kentucky. We could very well be seeing a Travis Perry, Trent Noah, Jasper Johnson, and a Malachi Moreno foursome of talent.

Cats Coverage was in attendance for today’s commitment and will have up footage from it on our YouTube channel as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can keep up with Jasper Johnson as he completes his senior season at OTE and can also get a glimpse of what Kentucky is getting in the talented scoring guard by watching this highlight from the EYBL circuit from session one.
