Let’s all weep together because this was very unexpected, and very embarrassing. Kentucky Football endured one of the worst games in recent memory and found essentially no success outside of forced runs from Demie Sumo-Karngbaye this afternoon which resulted in no touchdowns to show for it.
After losing their first conference game of the season by 25 points (31-6), the Wildcats have now piled up a three-game losing streak to the Gamecocks with two of those losses coming on their own turf. The home team was tabbed a 9-point favorite this week and then loses by almost triple that. Absolutely mind boggling and unacceptable.
It might be a little more sensitive right now since it just happened, but either way, what we witnessed on Saturday did not meet the expectation that’s been demanded and if this offense doesn’t make some quick changes it’s going to be a really long season. The defense wasn’t perfect either, but you can see how some slip-ups can work their way in when you’re left out on the field for the majority of the game. The fact that the offense managed to not even score a single touchdown today tells you all that you need to know. Two made field goals were the only way they found a route onto the scoreboard.
I’d start with the offensive line and team discipline, something that seems to be a reoccurring them around this town. Brock Vandagriff had an awful showing in week two and major part of that is directed back at the offensive line standing in front of him. They allowed him to be rushed endlessly, forcing the team to run on 18 straight possessions at one point out of absolute desperation. Reminder, we don’t even have available our running back option number one in Chip Trayanum and we’re relying heavily on the back-ups in that room to fuel our offense. DSK has been solid when called on, yes, but we should be in the position to get to rely on the stacked receiving group for our former five-star transfer quarterback to throw to if we could just get him protected by our “Big Blue Wall” for two seconds. Their non-existent protection led to three fumbles, just 30 total passing yards from Vandagriff, zero touchdowns, and 1 interception before making the change to Rutgers transfer Gavin Wimsatt in the fourth quarter where the starting quarterback was never seen again. Two games into the year, this is bizarre to be in this position.
Kentucky finished with 183 total yards of offense with 139 of that coming on the ground.
There’s a lot to be mad about from this one frankly, and this will be a major week for the staff to have a heart-ripping evaluation before top-ranked Georgia arrives in Lexington next week. It’s hard to imagine who will be in attendance with a blue shirt and a smile for that one, because today was really deflating. It’s a shame we’re only two games in and we’re having to reconfigure everything, but it’s exactly where we stand at the moment. Fans started clearing out in the third quarter and this time it wasn’t for a weather delay. Rip the bandaid off and acknowledge that if you don’t already, because this was not acceptable.
