Kentucky headed into Neyland stadium tonight and the home field advantage was in full effect with Tennessee blacking out the stadium for the second straight appearance vs. Kentucky. Kentucky walked into this game 3-5 (1-5) vs. Tennessee who is ranked 7th in the country and 6-1 (3-1).

It was a weird first half to say the least. Not a high scoring affair under the lights in Neyland. Tennessee missed two field goals and both teams turned the ball over once. Kentucky was able to break the plain first with a 27-yard touchdown from Brock Vandagriff to Josh Kattus to put Kentucky up 7-0 early.

Tennessee scored a touchdown in the first half for the first time in 3 games to tie things up with 4 minutes left.

Kentucky was then able to drive down the field and hit a 32-yard field goal to take the 10-7 lead into the half.

Halftime stats:

Tennessee starts the 2nd half off with yet another missed FG, but Kentucky’s Brock Vandagriff fumbles a couple plays later which led to a record breaking TD for Dylan Sampson (18 rushing TDs). It was looking to be all down hill from there.

Brock Vandagriff exited the game after a big hit and Gavin Wimsatt replaced him to then go and throw a near pick-6 that lead to another touchdown pass by Nico Iamaleava to take Tennessee up 21-10.

Wimsatt then had something to say about that… A drive that looked to be dead was brought back to life by a big pass from the backup quarterback to Dane Key, which was followed by a thrilling touchdown catch by Ja’Mori Maclin a couple plays later — Gavin Wimsatt’s first touchdown pass of his career at UK.

Kentucky converts the 2 point and makes it a 21-18 game.

The late game heroics weren’t going to be enough. Tennessee piled on another rushing touchdown. A game that Kentucky had multiple chances to make a move ended up being too far fetched for the ‘Cats.

Tennessee routes Kentucky 28-18 in Rocky Top.
