Kentucky Defeats Wright State In Season Opener

After Kentucky’s two exhibition games against Kentucky Wesleyan and Minnesota State, Kentucky opened their regular season tonight against Wright State. Both Kentucky Wesleyan and Minnesota State were good for exhibition play, however, this was the real deal tonight against the Raiders.

Kentucky had a good first half as they led Wright State, 46-24. This was in large part due to five Wildcats coming away with eight points. That list included Otega Oweh, Jaxson Robinson, Andrew Carr, Amari Williams, and Koby Brea, combining for 40 first half points. The big thing that I took away from the first twenty minutes was that Kentucky had six steals. I knew that this team was scrappy, but seeing it in person was very pleasant to see.

The majority of the points scored this evening were by Otega Oweh and Koby Brea. They combined for 39 total points in 47 (combined) minutes. However, Amari Williams’ double-double performance shouldn’t go unnoticed. He finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds, being the first Wildcat — and only — on this team to do so.

Here are the full stats from tonight’s win against Wright State.

Kentucky as a whole shot 60% from the field, including 45.8% from the three-point line. There were a total of six Wildcats in double figures, of course Otega Oweh and Koby Brea, but this also includes Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr, Amari Williams, and Ansley Almonor.

Kentucky never trailed in this match up and something to note was that there were only 7 turnovers for the team, backed up by 11 steals on the night.

Their next game will be this coming Saturday, November 9th, where they will once again be hosting at Rupp Arena. They’ll face Bucknell and tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM with the broadcast to be on SEC Network+. This will be their last game before their first real test of the season when they face Duke the following Tuesday night in the Champions Classic.
