After a decisive victory over USC Upstate in the season opener on Monday, Kentucky followed it up with another impressive performance Thursday night, defeating the Northern Kentucky Norse 70-41.

Kentucky got off to a sloppier start in this one with the first handful of offensive possessions coming up empty. Georgia Amoore eventually got things started with a pull-up jump shot, followed by a corner three by sharpshooter Amelia Hassett. The Norse kept it close with Kentucky in the first quarter, taking advantage of the Wildcats’ sloppy play.

Kentucky picked it up a bit in the 2nd quarter, and after a step-back three from Georgia Amoore to end the half, the ‘Cats led 36-23 at halftime.

Kentucky seemed to have found their footing as the third quarter progressed, taking smarter shots, feeding the post, and playing much stauncher defense as their lead grew.

Charlotte transfer Dazia Lawrence came alive in the early third quarter after a quiet first half, scoring 7 quick points to get the half started. She continued to contribute as the half went on, helping extend Kentucky’s lead. She finished with 10 points.

Once again, Virginia Tech transfer Clara Strack had a dominant game. Not only was she scoring, rebounding, and blocking shots, but she also became a high-post passing hub for the ‘Cats, tallying 8 assists as she found cutting guards and kicked it out to her teammates for a couple threes. She came very close to a triple double, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 blocks.

Feeding 6’7 freshman Clara Silva was clearly a big part of the gameplan in this one, and it was working. Silva ended the game with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 blocks.

The women’s basketball program finished with a score of 70-41, starting off the season 2-0. Kentucky will take on Wofford next Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
