Coming off of a disappointing road loss to Ole Miss, the Kentucky Wildcats had a great opportunity to pick up a massive win at home against the #3 ranked Texas Longhorns.
Unfortunately, that was not the case, as Kentucky played arguably their worst game of the season. Turnovers, missed shots, and the inability to rebound led to Kentucky getting downright blown out. Virtually nothing went right for the Wildcats in this one.
Georgia Amoore had a tough game, going 5-16 from the field, 0-3 from three, and committing 5 turnovers. Teonni Key was probably the Wildcats’ best player, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Dazia Lawrence had a solid game, scoring 11 points.
Below is the full box score:

The first quarter started off pretty rough, with Texas getting an and-one bucket and forcing a 5-second violation on the Kentucky inbound attempt. The next couple minutes included a few misses and offensive fouls from both teams before Teonni Key got Kentucky on the board with an offensive rebound and putback. Then, Dazia Lawrence knocked down the first three of the game to tie it at 5. The first quarter continued to be pretty sloppy for both sides, with missed shots and a lot of fouls, but it stayed close. Georgia Amoore led the way for the ‘Cats, and the score at the end of the first was 14-16, with the Longhorns leading.
The second quarter kicked off with Georgia Amoore nailing a step back mid range jumper to tie the game at 16, then Teonni Key gave the ‘Cats the lead with a tough drive to the rim. Key continued to produce for Kentucky a couple possessions later, getting to the free throw line and knocking down both foul shots. Unfortunately, things went stale for Kentucky on the offensive end, and Texas held onto a few point lead for the rest of the quarter. The score at halftime was 25-33, with Texas leading.
The second half started off with another Teonni Key bucket, but then the Longhorns went on a run, extending their lead to twelve. Nothing was going right for Kentucky, as Texas forced another 5-second violation, the 2nd one of the night. Kenny Brooks was forced to call an early timeout to try to regroup. Coming out of the timeout, Dazia Lawrence knocked down her 2nd three of the game, but Georgia Amoore committed three turnovers in a row after that, allowing Texas to extend their lead to 14. The Wildcats continued to turn the ball over, miss shots, and give up offensive rebounds. The end of the quarter was a complete foul fest as Kentucky simply could not stop hacking the Texas bigs in the paint. It was a recipe for disaster, as the Longhorns finished the third quarter leading by 22 points.
The fourth quarter started off a little better, with quick buckets from Amelia Hassett and Teonni Key, followed by a Lexi Blue corner three. Georgia Amoore then got a big and-one layup, and after hitting the free throw, the Texas lead was cut back to 12. This big run from the ‘Cats got the crowd back into it, and forced Texas to take a timeout. Sadly, things went back to being sloppy and disjointed after the timeout, and Texas extended their lead once more.
The final score was 49-67.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t Kentucky’s night. This game likely showed that the Wildcats aren’t quite on par with the elites of the SEC just yet, and that they’re probably sitting in that second tier of the conference right now. The team has struggled significantly with rebounding the ball, as they allowed far too many offensive rebounds in this one. The same thing was a massive issue against Ole Miss as well, where they allowed 25 offensive rebounds. It’s pretty difficult to win games allowing that many 2nd chances on the defensive end.
The Wildcats struggled to hold onto the ball, committing far too many turnovers. The shots weren’t falling either, and Kentucky’s star Georgia Amoore had arguably her worst game of the season, all-in-all, not a good game for Kentucky, and it’s probably one they’ll want to just burn the tapes after.
Kentucky takes on the Georgia Bulldogs at home on Sunday, February 16th at 2:00 PM, where they will have an opportunity to bounce back against a struggling Georgia squad.
