Kentucky at Texas A&M Preview

After a three game losing streak, Kentucky has answered the call again with back-to-back wins coming against South Carolina (road) and #25 Vanderbilt.

The rematch against the Commodores this past Saturday was one of the most complete games that we have seen out of the Wildcats this entire season against meaningful competition. From the start they set the tone early and never let their foot up off of the gas, winning by double-digits to a team that just beat them by twenty five a month ago.

Now the Wildcats look to build on this momentum as they go on the road again tonight to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M. With only two games left in the regular season, there is no room for error — especially from a tournament seeding perspective — as Kentucky is trying to scratch and claw their way back into a double bye for the 2026 SEC Tournament.

The Aggies have done a decent job in protecting their home court as they are 13-4 on the season at home. Even though they have their fair share of issues, it makes sense that the betting odds are against the Wildcats, but it’s not by much. Many sportsbook websites have Kentucky as just a 1.5 point underdog in this matchup.

On Monday, Kentucky guards Otega Oweh and Denzel Aberdeen, interviewed with local media and previewed the road trip game tonight. They also reflected a little bit as we’ve now made it to the last week of the regular season and these two won’t be back next year. Oweh and Aberdeen both will be without eligibility so this is their final run with Kentucky and college basketball itself. You can check out the full interviews on our YouTube channel.

Changing gears towards the game, a few things to watch for in tonight’s game is limiting the number of turnovers, ball movement, and guarding the perimeter. The Aggies average nearly 14 turnovers a game and Kentucky has struggled in several games this season with ball control. Kentucky will need to take care of the ball so that they can make sure they are not losing out on any possessions.

A trait that Texas A&M conveys particularly well is their ball movement. They don’t have to have isolation, but they do move the ball around and in a hurry. This has gotten them to average 19 assists per game which is good enough for fourth best in the entire country. So, to counteract that, Kentucky will have to maintain their off ball screens and communicate with each other.

Lastly, Texas A&M loves to shoot the deep ball. They average 30 attempts per game and hit around eleven of those. Kentucky has a history of letting teams who don’t normally shoot good from the outside have historic games against them, but in this case it’s different. They can shoot well against you if you let them. The Wildcats need to play tight defense and leave no shooting room for the guards especially when picks are set. They can’t let the Aggies get hot if the Wildcats want to pull out the road win.

All three of these things to watch for are tone-setters and when you’re fighting a home conference crowd, that’s half the battle. Rowdy environments and momentum swing can help disrupt your flow in a heart beat and at any moment your opponent can go on a run that you might not be able to recover from — unless you limit these three things. That’s your best chance.

A couple of players to keep an eye on for Texas A&M:

  • Rylan Griffin: The veteran 6’6 wing guard that averages 10.7 PPG and is a great facilitator. He will be part of the core offense and he shoots the ball really well from three (41%).
  • Rashaun Agee: The 6’7″ forward averages nearly a double-double with 14.3 PPG and 8.8 RPG while being a physical specimen in the paint. Kentucky post players will need to lock him down and keep him away from the Aggie rims to help limit their extra offensive possessions. He hurts you in two different ways: scoring and rebounding.
  • Pop Isaacs: The upperclassmen guard averages 9.7 PPG, 2.4 APG, and shoots at a high clip (nearly 41%) from behind the three point line. Denzel Aberdeen will have his hands full as Pop tries to facilitate their ball movement and control the tempo of the game. If you can disrupt this flow it could help you (Kentucky) get out in transition offense more like you want to.

I think College Station will be rocking tonight as the Aggies are looking to secure their place in the NCAA Tournament as well. Kentucky has locked theirs in already, but Texas A&M is still firmly on that bubble and are trying to claim theirs tonight.

I hope I am wrong about my prediction but I think this will be a tough environment for Kentucky to play in and will ultimately fall short. Kentucky has been both good and sometimes not so good on the road in conference play this season, so it makes it hard to tell which team you will see. Ultimately, I think the Wildcats lose tonight, 82-79.
