Kentucky fans are eager to learn more about their new quarterback, Kinney Minchey, the guy who is going to lead the offense in Will Stein’s first year as the head coach.

At Media Day on Monday, fans got to really hear from him and learn what he is bringing to Lexington. Above all, Minchey’s leadership and competitiveness stand out. That’s exactly how he described his mindset when coming into the program.

“I’d say my leadership style definitely picks up when I’m on the football field, or in the workout room,” Minchey said on Monday. “I’m very competitive, and all I wanna do is win, whether we’re on the football field or playing rock, paper, scissors, or any sort of small competition. All I wanna do is win, so whenever that gets flared up, especially with the guys around here who I love, my teammates, emotions could definitely get high. If I ever feel the need to say something, I’m gonna say it. The competitive nature is something that drives it.”

Leadership is an area that has been lacking over the last few years for Kentucky Football. Will Stein has come in and made sure that goes back to being a priority. When you’re faced with hard challenges over the course of a season, leadership stands out. That’s why Stein brought in Kenny Minchey.

As Minchey gears up for his first season as a starting quarterback, he’s coming into Lexington after being at Notre Dame for three seasons. Will Stein talked about what he sees in Minchey that will help him and Kentucky find success.

“Just tangibles, he’s really accurate,” Stein said of Minchey at Kentucky’s Media Day. “He throws on time. He’s got great feet, and he’s mobile. I think those are critical factors in successful quarterbacks in today’s modern football — Intangibles, loves the game, high football IQ, great leader. I’m excited about Kenny and what he’s going to be able to do for us this season.”

Kentucky’s starting quarterback has gotten plenty of high praise nationally and as a four-star recruit out of high school, the potential is certainly there. Not to mention Stein’s incredible track record with quarterbacks, getting to coach guys like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore. Now Kenny is next in that line of hand-picked quarterbacks to lead his offense.

Back in January, Stein talked about what he saw in Minchey when recruiting him. A guy with as impressive a track record with quarterbacks as Stein, he knows what he’s looking at.

“We did our background on him. Everybody we talked to, even guys on that staff, felt like they still would have won 10 games with Kenny out there playing quarterback (at Notre Dame). (I) talked to NFL scouts on him who feel like he’s got a really high upside in this game.”

Now, it’s time for Kenny Minchey to show his skills and leadership on the field and make a good impression in Will Stein’s first season at Kentucky.

We talked to some of the Kentucky Football players during our trip to Media Day, including Minchey, in which you can watch on our YouTube channel.

Also, dating back a few months, we do have one of Kenny’s first interviews with Lexington reporters following his Spring Game appearance with the Wildcats. That’s worth a listen to as well if you haven’t already.
