Five-star Kentucky men’s basketball commit Ryan Hampton announced on Sunday morning that he will be transferring back to Rockwall-Heath High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas for his senior season.
Before the news, anticipation had been building immensely, as Hampton announced on social media that he would be making a “huge announcement” on Sunday at 10 a.m., and many believed that he would potentially announce that he would be reclassifying and heading to Lexington for this upcoming 2026-27 season.
Obviously, that’s not the case, but UK still has the highly-touted forward locked up for the 2027-28 season.
“I’ve been through all the prep schools,” Hampton said. “I’ve been playing against the Montverdes, the Prolific Preps, Southeastern Preps. (I’m) really just going back to Rockwall-Heath, having a fun year with all my friends and being at home for a whole year.”
“I just want to be my ultimate self again, really. I had a lot of roles in the past in high school, but just being at Rockwall-Heath and trying to just do everything, what it takes to win,” Hampton said about his return to Texas. “I love Texas. I love being at home. So a whole year of being at home before I go to college is going to be great.”
Hampton, ranked as the No. 14 overall player in the class of 2027 and the No. 4 small forward in the class of 2027, began his high school career at Rockwall-Heath High School before spending time at South Central Prep (Oklahoma), Jermaine O’Neal’s Dynamic Prep (Texas) and most recently, DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The 6-foot-6 Oklahoma native is UK’s only current class of 2027 commit as of now.
Having a five-star commit this early will help head coach Mark Pope and his staff recruit, as players will want to go to a spot where they can have an authentic chance to win and showcase themselves in primetime matchups — and obviously the UK brand helps too.
We will have a chance to take a first glance at the 2026-27 Cats on Friday, Oct. 16 when UK hosts Arkansas Little Rock for an exhibition showdown. Tipoff time and viewing logistics are yet to be announced at this time.
