Kentucky football’s season begins in just a few weeks. Less than two to be exact. That means all of the learning turns into fine-tuning everything, from the schemes to the execution of plays. For new quarterback Kenny Minchey, he’s looking to play clean football as he heads into his first year as a starter in college.
Minchey redshirted in his first two seasons at Notre Dame before appearing in six games in 2025. Now, he’s a Wildcat and looking to make a name for himself as a starter. The former four-star quarterback out of high school has had a productive camp, with mistakes along the way. But, there’s some great news as the season approaches. Will Stein says QB1 just had his best week of practice.
“I think the first week, the offense as a whole struggled just to really get going,” Stein said this Saturday in his press conference. “Today. I thought (Minchey) did a nice job of throwing the ball where we’re supposed to. There were some drops that are out of his control, but I thought for the most part today he played within himself and went where the ball was supposed to go. You know, he’s still a guy that hasn’t played and started games. So there’s going to be some some growing pains in practice to to get him to where he needs to be. But Kenny’s had an elite camp. He’s had a really good camp. He’s improved. I thought he had his best week of practice.”
As the season gets closer, one thing Stein and his staff have been really preaching to their players is taking care of the ball. To help limit mistakes, they’re making sure Minchey prioritizes making the ‘easy money’ plays instead of trying to force passes, which increases the likliehood of turnovers.
“Even the best players, it’s just about taking the easy money. You don’t have to force plays down the field. You don’t have to get antsy. If you just make the correct play each time, the ball is going to move forward. So that’s not just with new players, but young and old. It’s playing quarterback. It’s an art and a science. You got to understand the down and distance. You got to understand the situation, and you got to play to that situation and know that you have really good players around you.”

Minchey seems to be well on his way in Kentucky’s offense with the season-opener coming September 5th versus Youngstown State.
