Talking season is almost over, and that means football is finally here.

After a long offseason, Kentucky Football will take the field Saturday for its season opener against the Youngstown State Penguins. Everything that has been discussed, debated, and anticipated throughout the offseason will finally be put to the test.

There is plenty of new surrounding the Kentucky football program heading into the 2026 season. From stadium upgrades to an almost entirely new coaching staff, the Will Stein era is ready to officially begin—and it all starts Saturday.

As Kentucky prepares for its first game, Stein knows his team will have its hands full with a Youngstown State offense he considers one of the best in the country at the FCS level.

“To me, their offense is the best in the FCS,” Stein said of Youngstown State during his Tuesday press conference. “It would be hard for me to find another unit across the country in their league that is better than what they have. They are very tough to defend on offense, and whoever plays them usually has struggles because of their quarterback and what they do offensively.”

While Stein has plenty of respect for the Penguins, his primary focus heading into Week one remains on his own team. More than anything, he wants to see Kentucky play disciplined, fundamentally sound football and avoid the mistakes that can derail a team early in the season.

“Ultimately, it’s about us playing clean, right? It’s about playing to our standard, what we’ve created here over the last eight months. We have to play with elite fundamentals and technique. We have to do our job.

“We have to own the football in all three phases, right? Protect the football on offense and special teams, recover the ball when they punt it back to us or kick it to us. We have to end with the ball in our hands, and then we have to create takeaways.

“And then finally, man, we got to play with relentless effort. That’s what I want to see. Our guys playing whistle to whistle, all four quarters, however long it takes.”

For Kentucky, Saturday will be about more than simply getting a win. It will be the first opportunity to see how the new-look Wildcats respond when the preparation ends and the lights come on.

Can Kentucky put together a complete performance in the season opener, establish its identity under Stein, and build momentum before facing its biggest early-season challenge? Hopefully so, because waiting on the other side of Week one is a very good and very talented Alabama team.

The Crimson Tide will come to town in Week two, giving Kentucky little time to settle in before facing the ultimate test. A strong, mistake-free performance against Youngstown State could give the Wildcats the confidence and momentum they need heading into that matchup but first Kentucky has to take care of business on Saturday.
