The Kentucky Wildcats opened the Will Stein era with a 45-13 win over Youngstown State on Saturday. Among the standouts was a couple of young guys in the wide receiver room. Both freshmen Kenny Darby and Prince Jean showed some real flashes of potential, with Darby emerging as one of the top receivers on the team.

We’ve heard a lot about Darby, a top-250 recruit in the 2026 class, from Stein throughout the offseason. He would always mention him when talking about some of the top receivers on the team. We finally got to see why on Saturday when the freshman receiver racked up a bunch of yards. Darby totaled three catches for 74 yards, a pair of those catches being explosive plays. He made plays of 37 and 33 yards, one of them resulting in a touchdown. It was an impressive first showing, and the future looks bright. With Prince Jean, he scored a touchdown along with two receptions for 27 yards in fewer snaps played than Darby.

After Kentucky’s season-opening win, Stein praised the two young freshmen, calling both “the real deal”.

“Kenny Darby’s done it since he showed up,” Stein said. “The first day he ever got here in winter, watching him throw some rounds, like that guy can play football. You can see it. He loves the game. He never wants to come out. He’s the real deal. And same with Prince Gene. Guy’s the real deal. He’s got a one-cut mentality. He catches the ball in traffic. He’s smart, tough, dependable.”

Kentucky Quarterback, Kenny Minchey, was able to connect with several receivers as nine players caught passes, but you can really tell he is building a real connection with Kenny Darby, all while Prince Jean is emerging early in the position room. Both are young, but that’s nothing to hold against them. If anything, it should make Kentucky fans really excited for the future.

If Kentucky’s young wide receiver core can continue producing similarly to that this season against much tougher competition in the Southeastern Conference. Then there could be a lot to celebrate in Will Stein’s first year as head coach.
