The Kentucky Wildcats and South Carolina Gamecocks have had a storied history within the conference, and for many years, this matchup has been seen as a swing game for both programs’ seasons. This year, that is once again the case for Kentucky, but for South Carolina, a loss would mean much more than just a number added to the record.

South Carolina has not had the greatest start to its season, as they come into this Saturday’s game with a 2-2 overall record and 0-2 in conference play, with a loss to Mississippi State and a blowout 49-18 loss to Alabama on the road. The elephant in the room is, head coach Shane Beamer has now lost seven straight SEC games dating back to last season. One would have to start to wonder how hot his seat is getting down in Columbia.

For the Gamecocks, this game against Kentucky is essentially a must-win, especially considering who they have remaining on their schedule. After Kentucky, South Carolina still has to play Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Clemson. There aren’t many opportunities for wins left, and they’re already in a rough spot at 2-2. Will Shane Beamer make it another week in Columbia if Kentucky manages to steal another win on the road this weekend?

Frustration from fans grew loud after their loss to Mississippi State, only to get even louder after the blowout loss to Alabama, a game that was basically over before halftime. Not only would a win in Columbia benefit Kentucky and put them at 4-1 with LSU coming into town, but it would also likely end a chapter in the South Carolina football era with Shane Beamer. Since he took over as the head coach of the Gamecocks, Beamer is actually just 16-26 in conference games. With this SEC drought, a loss to Kentucky could be the last straw for the South Carolina athletic department to make a change.

Would Beamer be fired during the season? It’s doubtful because if Beamer is fired before December of 2026 he will be owed nearly 28 million dollars in a buyout. There is so much pressure on him entering what is absolutely a must-win for the Gamecocks if Beamer wants to keep his job. If not, a loss might mean a change is on the horizon in Columbia.
