The Kentucky Wildcats are now 3-1 on the season and are heading to Columbia for their second road test of the season with a matchup against South Carolina on Saturday. We know what this one means for Kentucky; it could be a swing game in hindsight, but for the Gamecocks, their head coach will be looking to salvage their season against the Wildcats.
Ahead of the matchup, Will Stein previewed what South Carolina will be bringing to the table on Saturday. The Gamecocks present a run-heavy offense with a quarterback who can make downfield throws as well as being a dynamic player with his legs.
Will Stein explains what the Wildcats will have to face.
“It really is a run-based offense. This isn’t the air raid some people know it to be. This is more of a power run game with wide splits that has a vertical passing game, and they have the players to go do that. They have an elite quarterback in Sellers. I think he’s extremely dynamic. He can make every single throw, big arm, and then when he pulls the ball down, he’s very dangerous. They also have really good skill players on offense, so it’ll be a big task for our defense to go against these guys, especially in their place.”
What does Stein think is the key to having his guys ready for the electric environment at Williams-Brice Stadium? Having the right mindset and edge in practice.
“This is the closest thing to the NFL. It really is. It’s any given Saturday. You can beat anybody, and anybody can beat you. So if you don’t have that type of edge in practice, don’t expect that edge just to show up miraculously in the games, so we have to continue to practice at a rate that to me is winning football.”
Kentucky has an opportunity to not only get their first win over South Carolina since 2021, but end an era down in Columbia with Beamer on the hot seat. It won’t be easy, because the Gamecocks are going to be feeling the pressure all week and needing a win to get their season headed back in the right direction.
