Looking Back at the History of Kentucky’s ‘Power K’

The Kentucky Wildcats are hitting the throwback button this weekend as they welcome No. 10 LSU to town. On Saturday, Kentucky will be wearing vintage “Power K” uniforms, including putting the iconic logo at midfield. This has been hinted at for months, but now it’s official.

This gives us an excuse to go and look back at the history of Kentucky football under the Power K. The iconic helmets were worn from 1975 to 1991 at Kentucky and then just disappeared. Now, they’re back and we’re ready to look at some of the best moments that featured the Power K in its 16-year run as the logo.

One of the first big moments for Kentucky football with the Power K was in 1976, when the Wildcats last won an SEC Championship. Running back Derrick Ramsey led Kentucky to an SEC Championship win over Tennessee. The following year, Kentucky went all the way to the Peach Bowl after going nearly 25 years without a bowl appearance. They ended up shutting out North Carolina 21-0.

Kentucky would also end up with one of its best wins ever the following year, taking down No. 4 Penn State in Happy Valley 24-20 and ending with a 10-1 record and a ranking of #6 in the country while wearing the logo.

The Wildcats had a total of three bowl appearances in the 16-year run of the Power K, but as you can see, there were some historic moments in the iconic gear, including some massive regular season wins. Kentucky had one of its greatest regular seasons of all time while wearing the Power K.

On Saturday, a touch of nostalgia and memories will be on Kentucky fans’ minds as their team looks to make some 2007 magic happen, flashing back to when Kentucky upset No. 1 LSU in Commonwealth Stadium nearly twenty years ago, the last time Kentucky has defeated the top-ranked team.
