It was a night inside Kroger Field that Kentucky fans are going to remember for years to come. Much like the upset over LSU in 2007, this game had no shortage of thrilling moments. It was essentially a back-and-forth game for the most part up until Kentucky’s defense made a stop, followed by a field goal that sent them to overtime with Kenny Minchey running it in for a game-winning two-point conversion.

Much like the outcome of the South Carolina game, Kentucky won by Will Stein putting his guts on the line in overtime and his players executing what he and Joe Sloan drew up. For Kentucky, they know are 5-1 on the season with two top-10 wins. Will Stein talked about what it means to him to notch such a historic win under his belt and get off to the best start a first-year coach at Kentucky has had since 1913.

“There’s really not a lot of words right now. I’m pretty shocked — in shock. Shouldn’t say shocked. I’m in shock. We got a really good football team. Really good football team. People count us out. I took a picture of College GameDay this morning. Everybody picked LSU. Keep doing that. I appreciate that. Gives us a lot of fuel, a lot of fire because everybody doubts us, and this is a really tough group that’s battled a lot, injuries, a lot of change that’s happened since we’ve gotten here, and so this is a really big moment for our players. Really big moment for our players. They’ve earned it.”

“This was also for Big Blue Nation,” Stein continued. “This was for the state of Kentucky for anybody who grew up like me a Wildcat fan. They deserve it. They’ve put their heart and soul into this just like us.”

Will Stein is not only off to the best start for a first-year head coach since 2019, but his team is now the first in FBS history to have two straight 1-point overtime wins in back-to-back weeks. Having absolutely major guts in big moments has really paid off for Will Stein and Kentucky, and now the ceiling of this season just got much bigger.

“You gotta play to win. I don’t know what else to say…” he yelled in the midst of a packed Kroger Field storm on national television to ESPN reporter Taylor McGregor.
