The Kentucky Wildcats continued their hot season on Saturday when they took down Oklahoma on the road, 21-13. After racking up two top 10 wins and a comeback at South Carolina, their resiliency has gotten them to a 6-1 start and one of the best résumés in College Football.
That resume put the Wildcats into the top 15 last week, coming in at No. 15 before facing the Sooners. Now, after a ton of top teams went down over the weekend, five in the top 10 to be exact, Kentucky is ranked No. 12 in the country.
Heading into a home game against Vandy this week, Kentucky has a shot to keep their playoff hopes — and SEC championship game hopes — by continuing winning football games.
Who is ahead of the Wildcats in the updated poll? Tennessee is just ahead of Kentucky at No. 11, with Utah, UCLA, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Indiana, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, BYU and Miami as the nation’s top teams. Behind Kentucky are Alabama, who are the Wildcats’ only loss this season, as well as Houston and Iowa.
After their win over Oklahoma on Saturday, Will Stein discussed it and his team’s resolve.
“They’re playing for each other. And then toughness, like, toughness wins in football — college football and the SEC. You’ve gotta be mentally and physically tough. When we watch our tape, our guys fight. They fly around, they hit. They strain on the perimeter, they block up front, we run the ball. Those are, I think, two of the biggest DNA traits of our team is our connection and toughness.”
Kentucky has the potential to finish as good as 11-1 this season, and a 10-2 finish could certainly happen, which could put the Wildcats into the playoff projection that comes out weekly starting next week. They’re already popping up in different ones, so if they continue their strong season, they could definitely be in the real projection by the committee.
Postseason dreams could become reality more and more with each win. Kentucky is definitely taking a game-by-game approach, as they should.
