Mason Williams, son of former NBA Champion and current UK assistant Mo Williams, was under recruited out of high school. Williams was ranked as just the #126 player (#14 PG) in the 2026 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.com.
The freshman point guard is already proving these ranking to be wrong after just two exhibition games. After an impressive debut vs. Little Rock (10 points), Mason looked even better tonight versus #19 Texas Tech (14 points).
Two games into his career and the fans are already asking, “Should Mason be PG1?” If we are going off of stats and performance through two games, that’s not an abnormal question to have.
Tonight against the Red Raiders, Mark Pope played the hot hand all night. Mason Williams was one of those, and he made it to where he couldn’t be off the floor for an extended amount of time because they missed his production when he was. He tallied the 2nd-most minutes among the guards with 27 minutes played, just behind Alex Wilkins who had 29.
When Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland was asked about the play of Mason Williams he had nothing but great things to say about the young guard. “I loved his energy, thought he was a difference maker in the minutes that he played.”
If we are talking about impact on the game, Mason Williams was a +11 tonight, but that’s not even the main stat that stood out to us. His ZERO turnovers is the stat that popped off the stat sheet most. Through both exhibition games in a total of 47 minutes played he has just one turnover. In comparison to the other guards, Zoom Diallo has 6 turnovers (48 minutes played) and Alex Wilkins has 7 turnovers (55 minutes played).
Following the game he got a lot of praise from Coach Pope and his teammates.
“He’s one of those guys who has a really high ceiling if he keeps going,” said Mark Pope.
“I mean he’s the son of Mo Williams; I was telling my dad a few weeks ago, he’s doing stuff that like pro’s do,” said teammate Alex Wilkins.
“He makes us a lot better… He’s proven a lot of people wrong… Mason Williams is a hard worker,” said Malachi Moreno.
We think it’s safe to say that the Mason Williams has all the intangibles to make an impact in year 1 at Kentucky.
