This season will be the last one with a 12-team playoff format. Next year, college football is likely moving to a 24-team format. What does that mean for Kentucky? Nothing but good things, because with the Wildcats on the edge of a playoff berth this season, they would easily be in under the new format expansion.
On Will Stein’s radio show this past Wednesday, Stein gave his thoughts on the potential move to a 24-team playoff. What was Stein’s argument for the expansion? More games will matter for more schools in the long run.
“Now there’s going to be more games that matter for more people. So the notion that the regular season doesn’t matter, like, that’s what I think is not true,” Stein said on the potential expansion to a 24-team CFP format. “I think it now makes everybody’s schedule matter more, and the rival games are still going to matter. I promise you, the fans are still going to be excited to play their rival, and that’s my personal opinion, and I know that’s not shared by a lot of people in media and whatever, which is their take. I know a lot of coaches are excited about the potential to play in a playoff, but they think it’s just so we can save our jobs. Like, no, because I want to play in a dang playoff, like, I want Kentucky to host a playoff game. I want to do all that stuff, and so do all these other schools. More games are going to matter longer into the season.”
With the new system that is likely to start in 2027, a team like Kentucky should be dancing thinking about it. This year, Kentucky would easily get in. The fact that the Wildcats have a chance to get into the 12-team format in Will Stein’s first season is something that Kentucky fans are still trying to comprehend because of the program’s history overall. Now, a 24-team format will benefit a number of teams across the country and give them an opportunity that otherwise would not be possible.
