At this point in the season, Will Stein has his Wildcats 7-1 and is staring a College Football Playoff berth right in the face. No one but Stein and his team even thought we would be in this situation over halfway through the season. Kentucky was projected to win five games this season, as their over/under on a majority of the popular betting sites for total wins was 4.5 before the year even started.
Now, Kentucky has four games remaining, starting with a road matchup at No. 16 Tennessee, before finishing things off against No. 17 Florida at home, at No. 23 Missouri, and then a home clash with in-state rival Louisville. It begs the question: how will Kentucky finish its season? On one hand, the Wildcats can win out and become one of the best teams in the entire country at 11-1, which will be very hard to do. There is also the very likely 10-2, which means Kentucky drops one of its remaining games. Then, you’ve got a 9-3 finish, which, with Kentucky’s current resume, could sneak them into the playoff, but that’s not likely, as a marquee bowl game would be the more likely outcome.
Kentucky is in a weird spot; they could win out or there is a world that the Wildcats could drop the remaining 4 games as well, leaving them 7-5 on the season.
With that information, why not predict while we’re here? I predict that Kentucky will finish the season 3-1 in its final four games, with the lone loss coming to a Tennessee. This is a team that features one of the best defenses in the country and an offense that is elite at running the ball. It’s also just going to be hard in an environment that’s going to be the rowdiest one Kentucky has played in all season. As far as the three wins go, the Wildcats have the benefit of getting Florida and Louisville at home, with that road matchup with Missouri being the trickiest one of the remaining games. Even though Kentucky has struggled overall on the road in Columbia, I think this team can pull it off.
A 10-2 record would put Kentucky in the playoff, and as we’ve learned under Will Stein so far, it’s very hard to doubt that he can accomplish certain tasks. I think Kentucky is going to finish its historic run strong and make it a year to remember for Big Blue Nation.
