We knew at the beginning of this week Kentucky was in for a tough test playing on the road at Ole Miss. This was definitely the case as Ole Miss fans were rocking from the start of the game at 11:00 am local time. The opening kickoff which was close to being a fumble by Ole Miss nearly took the air out of the stadium. However, the call was reversed and Jaxson Dart led the Rebels down the field to score on their opening drive.
Kentucky’s opening drive was one of the best I have seen all season as both Brock Vandagriff and Gavin Wimsatt led the Wildcats 61 yards to set up a field goal for Alex Raynor. There was not much going for either Kentucky or Ole Miss in the beginning of the second quarter. However, Kentucky started a drive at the 6:12 mark on their nineteen yard line that went for over five minutes ending in a touchdown to Dane Key for Kentucky. This put Kentucky up 10-7 going into half time.
Kentucky and Ole Miss took turns kicking a field goal a piece early on in the third quarter. However, it was after a gutsy call to go for it on fourth and seven by Lane Kiffin that ended up in a touchdown for the Rebels. This put Ole Miss up 17-13 going into the fourth quarter.
It was looking bleak for Kentucky mid way into the fourth quarter but after a 40+ yard reception from Brock Vandagriff to Barion Brown this set Kentucky up perfectly to run the ball to try to pound it into the end zone. Talking about balls bouncing Kentucky’s way, the winning score came from a designed quarterback sneak from Gavin Wimsatt. Wimsatt fumbled the ball but Tight End, Josh Kattus, was in the right place at the right time to grab the fumble for a scoop and score touchdown putting Kentucky up 20-17.
The Wildcats managed to squeak by with a hard fought win on the road. This took a lot of effort, as well as, some balls to bounce their way and the missed field goal attempt by Ole Miss at the end of the fourth quarter. This is a huge victory for Mark Stoops and the organization as road wins against teams like Ole Miss have been few and far in between.
Here are the complete stats from today’s match up.

The Wildcats move to 3-2 on the season (1-2 in the SEC). Kentucky will take next weekend off as they have their first bye week of the season. The Wildcats will be back in action the following weekend on October 12th as they host the Vanderbilt Commodores at Kroger Field. The time for that game has not been released yet.
