In the last 2 days, I’ve written scouting profiles on Andrew Carr and Lamont Butler in an attempt to get to know the new Kentucky basketball players the way an NBA scout may evaluate them.

Today, we’ll take a close look at arguably the star of this Kentucky team, Jaxson Robinson.

NBA Draft Scouting Report: Jaxson Robinson

•Height/Weight: 6’7”, 195 lbs

•College: Kentucky (Transfer from BYU)

•2021-22 (Arkansas): 3.4 PPG, 1.2 RPG, 30.0% FG, 26.3% 3PT

Physical Profile

Jaxson Robinson has a strong physical profile for a wing, standing at 6’7” with a 6’9” wingspan. His frame is lean but wiry, allowing him to move effectively on both ends of the floor. Robinson possesses good athleticism and is comfortable playing multiple positions on the perimeter, making him a versatile asset on both sides of the ball.

Offensive Strengths

•Three-Point Shooting: Jaxson Robinson’s primary offensive weapon is his outside shooting. He averaged 2.5 made three-pointers per game at BYU, shooting 35.4% from deep. He excels in catch-and-shoot situations and has a quick release, making him a consistent perimeter threat. 

•Shot-creation: Standing at 6’7 and possessing a strong handle on the ball, he uses his length and athleticism to create his own shot at a high level. 

•Off-Ball Movement: Robinson is adept at moving without the ball, creating open looks through his intelligent positioning. He thrives in transition and spot-up opportunities, using screens effectively to find space on the perimeter. This translates well to a motion-heavy offense like Mark Pope’s.

•Versatility in Scoring: In addition to his three-point shooting, Robinson can score at all three levels. He is a great shot-creator and has shown flashes of being able to attack closeouts and finish in the mid-range or even at the rim.

Defensive Strengths

•Perimeter Defense: Jaxson uses his length and lateral quickness to defend multiple positions. His 6’9” wingspan allows him to contest shots effectively and disrupt passing lanes. He has shown solid instincts on the defensive end with the potential to become a reliable 3-and-D player.

•Switchability: He also has the mobility and size to switch onto guards and wings, making him a versatile defender. He demonstrated this ability frequently at BYU, particularly in pick-and-roll situations, where he can guard smaller, quicker players effectively.

Areas of Improvement

•Consistency and Aggressiveness: While Jaxson Robinson has shown the ability to score in bunches, his production can be inconsistent. He tends to defer when his shot isn’t falling and developing a more aggressive mindset could elevate his impact on the game.

•Strength and Physicality: To succeed at the NBA level, he’ll need to add muscle to his frame, particularly to improve his ability to finish through contact and battle for rebounds.

NBA Comparison

Jaxson Robinson’s game and role project similarly to players like Trey Murphy or Cam Johnson — hybrid wings who provide three-point shooting and defensive versatility. His shooting and length make him an attractive 3-and-D prospect, though he will need to develop his offensive versatility to reach his full potential.

Draft Projection

While he may play his way into a first round selection this year, Robinson currently projects as a second-round pick with the potential to carve out a role as a 3-and-D specialist in the NBA. His length, shooting, and defensive potential make him an intriguing prospect, but he will need to show more consistency and offensive development to secure a stable role in an NBA rotation.
