Is it just me or is anyone else feeling a little sluggish today? If so, it’s definitely justified. The day after Thanksgiving when you have spent time with friends and family can take you time to recuperate from, no doubt. Well, the Kentucky men’s basketball team has the chore of playing basketball tonight, running endlessly up and down that court, after all of the Thanksgiving festivities that took place yesterday.
Kentucky hosted WKU this past Tuesday night where the Wildcats won with a final score of 87-68. That was the lowest amount of points scored by this Kentucky squad in Rupp Arena this season.
Kentucky plays host to Georgia State tonight with tip-off starting at 7:00 pm EST. on the SEC Network. Georgia State is currently 4-3 on the year with their wins coming against Ball State, Toccoa Falls, North Carolina Central, and Tulsa.
The one thing I noticed in the three of Georgia State’s losses was their standout 101-66 loss to Mississippi State. Let’s be honest with ourselves, that was by far their hardest test thus far this season and the Bulldogs were able to roll the Panthers by thirty-five points. This will once again be a good game for Kentucky to kind of compare themselves to other teams in the SEC (Mississippi State), seeing how well they put away tonight’s opponent versus how the Bulldogs did.
Last Tuesday night was the only time this season that Kentucky did not cover the spread that was set for them, to my knowledge. Tonight the spread set by Draft Kings is -31 in favor of the Wildcats.
Three things I would like to see improvement from Kentucky tonight is: rebounding, limiting turnovers, and free-throw shooting. Not that rebounding was particularly bad against WKU, however, this Georgia State team poses another physical threat to Kentucky so I want to see how Kentucky will respond.
Turnovers, just make sure you are taking care of the ball and limit those as much as you can. I get that in Mark Pope’s offense the goal is to move the ball around quickly to find the open shot but there were moments that Amari Williams had the ball at the top of the key and did not look good at times with his ball movement.
Finally, free-throw shooting percentage. Kentucky shot 69% from the charity strip last Tuesday night, missing 13 as a team. When you get into good competition (SEC play) this type of shooting from the free-throw line will cause you to lose some games, so you have to clean that up a bit now while it’s not much at risk.
Overall I think Kentucky will respond well tonight and if they improve in these three areas then should be able to handle the Panthers with ease.
Kentucky wins 102-62 with Jaxson Robinson being the MVP, in my opinion. Some more Cats Coverage staff predictions are as followed:
Jack Wagner: 108-70, Kentucky. MVP – Otega Oweh
Tres Terrell: 98-75, Kentucky. MVP – Koby Brea
Braden Nevius: 103-62, Kentucky. MVP – Lamont Butler
Ethan Grantz: 105-65, Kentucky. MVP – Otega Oweh
